Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust (WAHT)

WAHT provides hospital-based services from three sites in Kidderminster, Redditch and Worcester. The Trust has an annual turnover of over £360 million and spends approximately £80 million on non-pay medical and surgical products per annum.

WAHT chose Science Warehouse as an effective catalogue solution which would help the Trust to manage its catalogue of over 600,000 items, make it easier for requisitioners to place orders, and control and standardise discretionary expenditure.

Challenges

  • Catalogue management was a heavy administrative burden for the WAHT procurement department, with a catalogue of over 600,000 items
  • Difficult to ensure that products were purchased via the most cost effective supply route
  • Accurate category coding to ensure best value when purchasing

Solution

Science Warehouse’s managed catalogue service significantly reduced the administrative burden on the procurement department and improved visibility of spend across the Trust.

WAHT now have tighter controls in place in terms of which products can be purchased, meaning that users can only buy items from the Trust’s selected Suppliers.

Within a three month period, the Trust saved £150,000.

“The Trust is now in a much better position to support the financial challenges of the NHS today in helping control expenditure both in terms of contractual compliance and delivering cash releasing savings.”
