  1. What is your job role at Science Warehouse?

My role at Science Warehouse is Software Engineer and I am responsible for security within the eCatalogue team. Each engineering team has one member responsible for the security aspects of any projects we are currently working on.

  2. Describe an average day at work including any projects you are working on at the moment

We usually have a stand-up meeting first thing in the day; I get into the office a bit earlier to get ready for the meeting. After the stand-up meeting, I have an informal catch up with the team in the kitchen whilst preparing a cup of tea. Then I am ready to be focused at my computer and work on my tasks.

Most of the time I will continue with whatever I was working on the day before. I check if there is any pending code to review or anything else that requires my attention before starting another story. If I fancy a break from design and programming tasks, I will write documentation or attend various meetings.

Currently, my team is working on the new search functionality which is completely new for us. We have redesigned the architecture and user interface. We’re using the latest technologies (Elasticsearch, Akka, Javascript frameworks) and modern architectures (Microservices, event-driven design, concurrent programming) with the aim to offer a much better user experience but also to allow Science Warehouse to keep growing and be ready for future challenges.

  3. What is your favourite thing about your career?

The best thing about my career is that Software Development is in continuous evolution. Everything moves so fast; new programming languages, algorithms, frameworks, architectures etc. Everything changes every day. This keeps me motivated, alert and always looking for a better solution. However, this can be stressful. Whatever you master today, it will be out of date tomorrow.

  4. What did you do before joining Science Warehouse?

I have been working as a Software Engineer for several years now. Before joining Science Warehouse, I was working in BAE Systems AI in a similar role. Before that, I was working in Spain at an electronic voting company (Scytl) in Barcelona. It was there where I started to be interested in living abroad. I envied my foreign colleagues, so my partner and I decided to take that step. So far so good!

  5. What motivates you to work hard?

I like the fact that my work impacts the success of the company. It’s a good feeling to see how something that you have been working on helps the company to grow. These kind of challenges motivate me a lot.

  6. What did you want to be when you were younger?

I always wanted to be a doctor or an engineer. I was very interested in the human body and diseases but I also wondered how things such as cars or computers worked. As soon as I got my first computer and I was able to start using it, I realised that I wanted to work with computers. It allowed me to create new things (programs or web pages) from home.

  7. What is your proudest accomplishment?

Living abroad was a dream for me. Now, after 4 years living in Leeds, I can say that that dreams come true! It was a very tough decision to make but I’m very proud of it.

  8. Do you have any party tricks?

    Sorry, I don’t have any.

  9. If you could go on a £1,000,000 shopping spree, what would you buy?

I would go to a travel agency and spend a million pounds on trips around the world.

  10. What is your motto?

If it’s important to you, you will find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.
